Many of you probably haven’t given the history of perfume too much thought. The word perfume comes from a phrase in Latin. “Per” means “through” and “fumus” means smoke. Later, the French gave the name parfum to incense because it was a pleasant smell that drifted through the air when being burned. There are a couple periods of history that perfume has influenced. It is said that the history of perfume can be tangles with the beginning of the human race.
As you see, incense was the first type of perfume that was known to mankind. The Mesopotamians discovered incense about four thousand years ago. Ancient cultures are known for burning many kinds of woods, resins and bums during their religious ceremonies that they held. Often, they soaked the resin and fragrant woods in oil and water, then rubbed it on their bodies. Also, they took these perfumes to embalm the deceased. By looking at the hieroglyphics that can be found on the pyramids, we have learned that ancient Egypt used perfume in their lives. Incense came to Egypt around 3000 B.C and it became very popular with Queen Hatshepsut. The Queen led expeditions to find incense along with some of the other commodities that were valuable. In the temple, you would find a botanical garden that had tons of incense trees that were recovered during these expeditions. Perfume has been found in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. As you see, the use of perfumes has been around for a very long time. Perfumes have a great amount of history and many individuals do not even realize this.
